From Slavoj Žižek's First as Tragedy, Then as Farce, page 80

. . . But with the financial meltdown, the urgency to act was unconditional; sums of an unimaginable magnitude had to be found immediately. Saving endangered species, saving the planet from global warming, saving AIDS patients and those dying for lack of funds for expensive treatments, saving the starving children... all this can wait a little bit. The call to "save the banks!" by contrast, is an unconditional imperative which must be met with immediate action. The panic was so absolute that a transnational and non-partisan unity was immediately established, all grudges between world leaders being momentarily forgotten in order to avert the catastrophe. But what the much-praised "bi-partisan" approach effectively meant was that even democratic procedures were de facto suspended: there was no time to engage in proper debate, and those who opposed the plan in the US congress were quickly made to fall in with the majority. Bush, McCain, and Obama all quickly got together, explaining to confused congressmen and women that there was simply no time for discussion — we were in a state of emergency, and things simply had to be done fast . . . And let us also not forget that the sublimely enormous sums of money were spent not on some clear "real" or concrete problem, but essentially in order to restore confidence in the markets, that is, simply to change people's beliefs!

I realize that this blog has been pretty superficial so far: what I wore, what I want, what I ate...but these are all just parts of my life. And while I do spend a great deal of time daydreaming about clothes I also spend a great deal of time reading and complaining about the world. So, it may seem silly to quote  Žižek after posting about blouses, but it's all there swirling around in my head and somehow it fits together.

I would be perfectly content to own all of these tops and just rotate them every day. Right now I only own one top that ties at the neckline. It's disgraceful, really.

You can find all of these wonderful tops in wonderful colors at Ruche.

before and after

This was the sad state of my most essential make-up after months of being too poor to replace anything that needed replacing...

But I finally got paid and went directly to Sephora...

My main purchase was new foundation. I went with Bare Minerals because I think it's ok to spend a little more on foundation. I also picked up some Sephora eyeliner (that is actually long enough to grasp between my fingers!) and two Sephora nail polishes because the Sephora brand was buy-one-get-one.

I appreciate that Sephora always has some sort of coupon or deal to trick me into thinking I am saving money when I really just end up spending more, it works every time!

This week it dawned on me that I am really just watching New Girl for the outfits. While I still enjoy story-lines involving Jess and Nick, I couldn't care less about the other characters and find them more distracting than anything else.

Although, I will say that Cece looked bangin' in those jeans:
And I always love mustard yellow, especially when it's a top that ties at the neck!

I didn't love this day-time look that Jess wore...
but only because I wasn't into the top. I thought the skirt was really cute though.

Jess had two great date-night looks in this episode. First, she looked beautiful in black and white with red heels:
And then in purple, with her hair pulled up:
I am hoping by winter I'll be able to do something similar with my own hair!

I'm a little late on posting about Pretty Little Liars because the season just ended,

but Spencer Hastings' style is nearly perfect.
She dresses like a real person, but a really well-dressed real person.

And she also had the best ball gown.

 I love these colors together,
and her hair always looks so good!
Off into the sunset.

what I wore to work

 Scarf: H&M / Jeans: BDG
 Coat: Von Maur

Socks: Target / Shoes: Ruche

eat

Mushroom pâté with spinach on a white roll

I never thought I'd enjoy food from a tube, but it is indeed delicious. You can find these tubes all over Prague (and beyond?). Standard grocery stores usually just carry the salmon pâté, while health food stores offer more of a variety. I've only tried the 'Vegetarian Tofu Spicy Mexican' and the 'Mushroom' so far and must say that the mushroom is far superior. The Bio brand is also vegetarian and organic! Yum.

what I wore

Top: Urban Outfitters

Skirt: Urban Outfitters / Shoes: Seychelles Women's Typewriter Pump in Mushroom/Taupe

I love these shoes, but they're not really practical for Prague. I still need some practice in them as they are the tallest shoes I own, but I'm waiting for a sitting/standing event instead of a long distance walking event. But they sure are beautiful!

An introduction

Hi there. I'm Mary, a 25 year old English teacher currently living in the Czech Republic with my husband of seven months, Paul

We've been here since last fall and are really settling in now, just in time for spring.

We spent the afternoon at a nearby park having a picnic, listening to music, and enjoying the weather for the first time in weeks!

But we're generally pretty busy teaching and lesson planning so I've started this blog to make the most of my free time and as an outlet for all of the shopping I can't afford to do!
